Week 12:

Buenos Dias! In week 12 the recruits began their occupational Spanish classes with Ms. Karen Murphy from Murphy Associates.  They learned Spanish pronunciation, basic greetings, courtesies, communication strategies, cultural nuance and how to address people using their proper titles.

“I focus my class on teaching the recruits how to broadcast their Spanish language capability,” said Ms. Murphy.

On Monday, the recruits learned about ID fraud when Ms. Caroline Wilichoski came by from the MA ABCC.  They were educated on counterfeiting and different situations that have occurred with identity theft.

Some issues discussed in Criminal Law this week focused on domestic violence as a community issue and how it affects children.  Also, all communication presentations were completed in week 12.  They got the chance to practice their letter writing skills as well.

Sergeant Fredrick Carlton taught key control.  He demonstrated the many keys used in the facility as well as the many methods inmates use to pick locks.  Deputy Paul Spencer discussed all issues involving transportation and the recruits got to see a transportation van first-hand.

All the recruits got the chance to tour the Lowell Community Counseling Center.  They learned what takes place there and got to see the ins and outs of the facility.  Drug testing and programs were discussed with the staff.

At morning PT with Sergeant Brian Crane, the recruits combined physical training with handcuffing and various defensive tactic moves.  To further focus on the idea of teamwork, they performed some training while actually having their shoelaces tied together.  They knew they had to work together to accomplish their goal.

Time seems to be flying by, as week 12 marks the halfway point of the 34th Basic Training Academy.
