WILMINGTON HIGH SCHOOL GETS A TASTE OF CORRECTIONS

On Tuesday February 2nd, ten students from Wilmington High School spent their Career Day at the Middlesex House of Correction in Billerica. This group was made up of juniors and seniors interested in expanding their interest in law enforcement.

Their day began with Roll Call followed by Assistant Superintendent Sean McAdam and Deputy Kevin Slattery introducing the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office. After the introduction, Deputy Brian Sheehan, Officer Crystal Peverill, Treatment Advisor John MacMillan, Sergeant John Ellis, Social Worker Laura King and Daniel Lee from Classification all gave descriptions of their daily jobs.

Their next stop was to the Health Services Unit where Sergeant Kelley Longo gave the students an enthusiastic tour of the different areas that fall under HSU.  They saw where inmates can receive mental health, dental and eye treatment. They then were broken into two groups and got a firsthand look at the POD areas where chow was being held.

Following a short lunch break, Captain James Aiello gave a demonstration on inmate handmade weapons.  Up-to-date security measures were mentioned and Captain Aiello also talked about Internal Perimeter Security (IPS).  The students then moved on for their afternoon tour with Deputy Sheehan, Deputy Donoghue, Captain Gannon and Officer Peverill.

They learned all about the importance of central control while in the central control room.  They then went to areas such as the tiers, dorm, inmate gym, intake and treatment PODs. While in intake, Officer John J. Crowley and Officer Walter Marcinkewich performed a K-9 demonstration. They then sat on a classification hearing with Daniel Lee and met with assessment. The day wrapped up with Strike Two information and any questions that any of the students had.
