A message from Sheriff James V. DiPaola

Welcome to the Middlesex Sheriff's Office website.

Deputy Sheriffs on a daily basis focus on the care, custody and control of the inmates and detainees assigned  to our facilities, as ordered by the judiciary.  On average we are responsible for the well being of more than 1,400 individuals housed within the Middlesex House of Correction at Billerica and the Middlesex Jail at Cambridge.

We go beyond the mandated necessities of confinement, medical and nutritional needs by taking a holistic  approach to each individual.  We offer programs in substance abuse, violence prevention, mental health counseling and education in order to examine and address the roots of criminal behavior.  Other programs that we provide focus on parenting skills, GED, and ABE  programs, victim awareness and vocational training in culinary arts, horticulture and other areas of expertise.

Our dedication to public safety does not stop at the walls of our institution.  To facilitate open communication and the sharing of resources we have developed partnerships with local, state and federal law enforcement authorities.

Our numerous community initiatives, such as our youth public safety academy, bolster our neighborhoods and help guarantee that the children of today become the leaders of tomorrow.

Since being elected sheriff in 1996, I have made it my goal to bring corrections in Middlesex County into the modern era. The role of sheriff has changed since the old west.  Spurs and six-shooters have been replaced by progressive new techniques and innovative new technology that enable us to more efficiently and effectively maintain peace and order in our communities.

At the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office we remain devoted to the 54 cities and towns of Middlesex county – and we remain faithful to our core beliefs of professionalism, respect, fairness and integrity.

Much of what we do happens outside the view of the public eye.  But despite the lack of spotlight, the men and women of the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office work hard every day to create a comforting level of confidence in the public safety network.  We know our inmate and community services have an immeasurable impact on society.  We are proud to work tirelessly for public safety in Middlesex County and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
