On Friday, May 11 Sheriff James V. DiPaola presented the 2007 Correctional Officer of the Year awards to four outstanding members of the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office. “Correctional officers work side by side with convicted criminals in an environment where they are greatly outnumbered. There are no cubicles here. Their days are filled with danger, constant vigilance and compassion. Their dedicated service has bolstered the efficacy of our justice system and the safety of our communities. The citizens of Middlesex County can sleep soundly knowing that brave men and women like these four officers are walking the tiers. They deserve our support, our applause and especially our thanks,” Sheriff DiPaola said.
The 2007 Honorees are:
Lieutenant Joe Joubert from Lowell – Correctional Officer of the Year from the Billerica facility.
Lieutenant Richard Vivier, Jr. from Methuen – Correctional Officer of the Year from the Cambridge facility.
Captain Thomas Maloney from Townsend – Administrator of the Year from the Billerica facility.
Assistant Deputy Superintendent Scott McClory from Chelmsford – Administrator of the Year from the Cambridge facility.
The ceremony was held in honor of the annual National Correctional Officer Week (May 6 – May 12). This week is an opportunity to honor the brave men and women of corrections. Society often does not recognize their commitment but, despite their job’s lack of sexy, pop-culture spotlight, correctional officers play one of the most important roles in public safety: they are the silent guardians of law enforcement.
