Built in 1971, the Middlesex Jail in Cambridge sits atop the Cambridge Superior
Courthouse. It is is one of the few high-rise maximum security lockups in
the country.
At times there can be anywhere between 340-400 detainees being housed in this
facility that was originally built for 160. While all detainees at the
jail are not convicted and may be waiting for, or in the midst of legal
proceedings, they are offered education classes, religious services and other
programs.
